The Skanda Purana states:

Mantrahīnaṃ kriyāhīnaṃ yat kṛtaṃ pūjanaṃ hareḥ
sarvasampūrṇatāṃ yāti kṛte nīrājane śive.

Meaning in English: Even if worship of the Lord is performed without proper mantras or rituals, it attains full completeness when Aarti (Niraajana) is performed at the end. Observing or performing Aarti purifies the mind and enhances spiritual merit.

Haribhakti Vilasa mentions:

Nīrājanaṃ ca yaḥ paśyed devadevasya cakriṇaḥ,
saptajanmani vipraḥ syāt ante ca paramaṃ padam.

Meaning in English: One who witnesses the Aarti of Lord Vishnu will be born as a Brahmin for seven lifetimes and ultimately attain the supreme abode.

Vishnu Dharmoottara adds:

Dhūpaṃ cārātrikaṃ paśyet karābhyāṃ ca prabandhate,
kulakoṭiṃ samuddhṛtya yāti viṣṇoḥ paraṃ padam.

Meaning in English: One who observes the incense offering and Aarti and receives it with both hands uplifts countless generations of their family and attains Vishnu's supreme abode.

How to Perform Aarti (Step-by-Step)

Key points to observe while performing Aarti:

  1. Recite the deity's main mantra (Mool Mantra) three times after completing the worship.
  2. Offer flower offerings (Pushpanjali) three times.
  3. Light lamps using ghee or camphor — an odd number of wicks is considered auspicious (5, 7, 9…).
  4. Perform Aarti while ringing conch, bell, or playing other instruments.

Scriptural Instruction:

Tataśca mūlamantreṇa dattvā puṣpāñjalitrayam,
mahānīrājanaṃ kuryān mahāvādyajayasvanaaiḥ;
prajvālayet tadarthaṃ tu karpūreṇa ghṛtena vā,
ārārtikaṃ śubhe pātre viṣamānekavartikam.

From Padma Purana:

Kuladruṃ agaṃ karpūraṃ ghṛtaṃ candanameva ca,
sapta vā pañca kṛtvā vā dīpavarttikām;
kuryāt saptapradīpena śaḍghaṇṭādīvādyakaiḥ.

🙏 Five Components of Aarti

Pañca nīrājanaṃ kuryāt prathamaṃ dīpamālayā,
dvitīyaṃ sodakābjena tṛtīyaṃ dhautavāsasā;
cūtāśvatthādipatraiśca caturthaṃ parikīrtitam,

  1. Lamp Offering (Deepamala) — illuminating the deity with multiple lamps.
  2. Water Offering via Conch or Vessel (Sodakaabja) — symbolizing purity and life-giving energy.
  3. Clean Cloth Offering (Dhautavasasa) — representing personal and ritual cleanliness.
  4. Sacred Leaf Offering (Chutashvatthaadi Patrai) — using leaves from sacred trees like mango or peepal.
  5. Full Prostration (Sashtanga Pranam) — complete surrender with eightfold bodily gestures.

🌸 Sequence of Waving Aarti (Movement Pattern)

Ādau catuḥ pādatale ca viṣṇornābhideśe mukhabimba ekam,
sarveṣu cāṅgeṣu ca saptavāraṃ nīrājanaṃ bhaktajanastu kuryāt.

Meaning in English: Start at the feet of the deity with 4 circles, then 2 around the navel/midsection, 1 around the face, and 7 encompassing the entire form. Symbolically offers light to all elemental centers of the body, culminating in surrender of the entire consciousness.

🌼 Conclusion

Aarti is not merely the conclusion of worship—it is the illumination of devotion, the vibration of surrender, and the purification that dissolves imperfections into light. Performing, witnessing, and absorbing the experience of Aarti are all highly meritorious. Regular, disciplined Aarti enhances mental focus, creates a sattvic (pure) environment, strengthens devotion, and completes the spiritual experience of worship.
