Achamana (Ritual Sipping of Water)
Begin puja with achamana:
- Om Keshavaya Namah - First achamana
- Om Narayanaya Namah - Second achamana
- Om Madhavaya Namah - Third achamana
- Om Hrishikeshaya Namah - Wash hands with this mantra
Body Purification Mantra
Om Apavitrah Pavitro Va Sarvavasthang Gato'pi Va
Yah Smaret Pundarikaksham Sa Bahyabhyantarah Shuchih
Sprinkle water on the body while reciting this mantra. Then invoke Lord Ganesha:

Types of Puja
There are three main types of puja in Vedic tradition:
1. Panchopachar Puja (Five Offerings)

Rules for Tulsi and Bilva Patra Collection
Prohibited Times for Plucking Tulsi
- During Vaidhriti and Vyatipata yoga
- On Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays
- On Dwadashi, Amavasya, and Purnima
- On Sankranti days
- During nighttime
- During birth or death pollution periods
Note: During prohibited times, use tulsi leaves plucked the previous day or naturally fallen leaves.
Prohibited Times for Plucking Bilva Patra
- On Chaturthi, Ashtami, and Navami tithis
- On Chaturdashi and Amavasya
- On Sankranti days
- On Mondays
Note: Since bilva patra is extremely dear to Lord Shiva, during prohibited times, offer leaves plucked the previous day.

On the Left Side
- Kalash (pot) filled with fragrant water

On the Right Side
- Ghee lamp
- Conch shell filled with fragrant water
In Front
- Ground sandalwood paste with kumkum and camphor

- Naivedya (within a square boundary of water)
Method of Offering and Removing Flowers
Offering Method
- Offer flowers, fruits, and leaves in their natural upward-growing position
- Turn the right palm upward and offer flowers using the middle finger, ring finger, and thumb
- Offer durva grass and tulsi leaves facing toward yourself
- Offer bilva leaves facing downward
Removal Method
- Remove offered flowers using the thumb and index finger
Prayer for Forgiveness
After completing puja, recite this mantra:
Mantrahinam Kriyahinam Bhaktihinam Janardana
Yat Pujitam Maya Deva Paripurnam Tadastu Me
Avahanam Na Janami Na Janami Visarjanam
Pujam Chaiva Na Janami Kshamasva Parameshwara

Meaning: O Lord! Even if my worship lacks proper mantras, procedure, and devotion, please accept it as complete. I do not know proper invocation or dismissal, nor do I know worship properly—please forgive me. I have no other refuge except You; with Your compassion, please protect me.
Final Offering
Conclude by offering everything to the Lord:

Rules for Installing Murtis at Home
Appropriate
- Single murti of each of the five deities
- Shaligram shila

Inappropriate (Not to Keep at Home)
- Two Shivalingas

Note: Shaligram and Shivalinga do not require prana pratishtha (consecration). They are self-manifested and universally sacred.

Special Notes
- Shaligram and Shivalinga do not require awakening rituals (prana pratishtha) or invocation/dismissal
- Tulsi leaves and Ganga water never become stale or impure
- Tirtha water (sacred water from pilgrimage sites) does not become stale
- Clothes, sacred threads, and ornaments do not carry the defect of being used
- Flowers kept at the florist's shop do not become stale
