Bindhyabasini Temple (Birgunj)

In Birgunj city of Parsa district and surrounding areas, two important Shakti Peethas are known by the name 'Bindhyabasini', which have great importance in local religious life.

1. Bindhyabasini Temple (Kehuniya)

This historical temple is located in Kehuniya village, about 8-10 km west of Birgunj market.

• History: According to legend, this temple was established by the then King Ran Bahadur Shah. According to a copper plate in the temple, the idol was consecrated in 1934 BS. This temple is considered a form of Goddess Bindhyabasini located in Vindhyachal, India.
• Religious Belief: It is believed that devotees who cannot go to Vindhyachal in India will get similar results by worshiping here. King Mahendra and Queen Ratna also supported the renovation of this temple.

2. Gahawa Mai Temple (Maisthan, Birgunj)

Located in the heart of Birgunj, this temple is better known by the name 'Maisthan' and is considered the 'Gram Devi' (protector of the city) of Birgunj.

• Interesting Origin Story: The establishment of this temple is believed to have taken place about 200 years ago. It is said that Goddess Bhagwati appeared in a dream to local Jiyut Mahato Kahar and commanded him to throw a bamboo stick and build a temple wherever it fell. Worship was started after the stick fell in the place where the temple is now.
• Meaning of the Name: Initially, this temple was called 'Dwar Devi' as it was at the entrance of Gahawa village. Later, it became known as 'Gahawa Mai' according to the name of the area.

Festivals and Fairs

A grand fair is held in both these temples during Bada Dashain. Especially on the days of Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami, thousands of devotees offer sacrifices and worship. The role of these temples is very important in the commercial and social life of Birgunj, and there is a tradition of visiting here before starting any auspicious work.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Simara Airport (SIW), approximately 20 km north of Birgunj. From there, taxis and local buses are available to Birgunj city, followed by local e-rickshaws to the temple area.
• By Road: Birgunj is about 135 km south of Kathmandu (6-7 hour drive). Regular buses and micro-buses connect it to major cities across Nepal.
• From India: The temple is near the border. Raxaul (Bihar, India) is the nearest railway station; one can cross into Birgunj and take local transport directly to the temple.
• Local Transport: E-rickshaws (Mayuri), cycle rickshaws, and local tempos are common and affordable within Birgunj.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from October to March when the weather is pleasant. Major festivals include Bada Dashain and Chaitra Dashain, during which the temples are beautifully decorated and attract large crowds.
