Deuti Bajyai

Located in Birendranagar (Pipira) of Surkhet district, Gangamala Deuti Bajyai Temple is a major religious site in the Karnali Province. This temple is worshipped as the Goddess of Justice.

History and Legend

There are two main stories about the origin of the temple. According to one story, while casting a net for fishing in the Bheri River, people of the Raji caste found a divine maiden (Gangamala Devi). According to another story, after a Brahmin widow was accused of being a witch, she committed suicide in the temple and later she began to be worshipped as a power by the name 'Deuti Bajyai'. Cannons and swords used during the Nepal-Tibet war of 1812 BS are still preserved in the temple complex.

Raji Community and Worship Tradition

The biggest feature of this temple is its priest tradition. Since ancient times, there has been a custom of only persons from the Raji community being priests here. Especially, women of the Raji community also conduct worship as priests here, which is rarely found in other Hindu temples.

Religious Beliefs and Festivals

• Custom of Flying Pigeons: Previously, pigeons were sacrificed here, but after the visit of the then King Birendra, the sacrifice of pigeons was stopped and the custom of flying pigeons as a symbol of peace began.
• Sacrifice Practice: There is a custom of sacrificing goats in the temple. However, sacrifices are not offered on Ekadashi, Aunsi, Sundays, and throughout the month of Shrawan.
• Goddess of Justice: The popular belief that Deuti Bajyai gives justice and punishes those who do injustice is deep in Surkhet and surrounding areas. A large crowd of people gathers here to worship for a safe journey after buying a new vehicle.

Travel Guide: How to Reach

• Location: Situated in Pipira, on the eastern edge of Birendranagar (the capital of Surkhet).
• By Air: The most convenient way is to fly from Kathmandu to Surkhet Airport. The temple is approximately 4 km from the airport.
• By Road: Buses and private vehicles connect Surkhet to Kathmandu (approx. 12-15 hours) and Nepalgunj (approx. 3 hours).
• Local Transport: Once in Birendranagar, auto-rickshaws are the most common way to reach the temple. It is a short 10-15 minute ride from the main bazaar or bus park.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from October to March when the weather is pleasant. The temple is most vibrant during Bada Dashain and Chaite Dashain, when thousands of pilgrims visit to offer prayers and make vows (Bhakas).
