Mayadevi Temple

Mayadevi Temple is a world-famous Buddhist temple built at the birthplace of Lord Gautam Buddha. It is located in Lumbini of Rupandehi district and is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

History

The history of Mayadevi Temple starts with the birth of Lord Buddha (623 BC). In 249 BC, Emperor Ashoka visited Lumbini and erected a stone pillar (Ashoka Pillar) here, on which an inscription is carved saying "Shakyamuni Buddha was born here". After being in the shadows for centuries, this site again focused the world's attention after the Ashoka Pillar was found in 1896 AD. In 1997 AD, UNESCO listed it on the World Heritage List.

Architecture and Main Features

• Structure: The current white-colored modern temple building was constructed in 2003 AD, which has kept the ancient brick remains inside safe.
• Marker Stone: In the inner part of the temple, there is a sacred stone that indicates the exact birthplace of Buddha. It is currently kept safe inside bulletproof glass.
• Nativity Sculpture: There is an historical statue of the 4th century inside the temple, in which the scene of Queen Mayadevi giving birth to Buddha while holding a branch of a Sal tree is shown.
• Pushkarini Pond: Beside the temple is a sacred pond, where it is believed that Mayadevi bathed before giving birth to Buddha and Buddha was given his first bath.

Religious Importance and Festivals

This temple is considered the center of world peace and non-violence. Among the four major sacred sites of Buddhism, Lumbini is the first and most important site.

• Buddha Jayanti: On the day of Baisakh Purnima (April/May), a grand festival is celebrated here in memory of Buddha's birth, attainment of enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana. On this day, thousands of devotees from all over the world come here for meditation and lamp lighting.

Travel Guide: How to Reach

• By Air: The nearest airport is Gautam Buddha International Airport (Bhairahawa), which is approximately 22–25 km from Lumbini. Daily flights are available from Kathmandu (approx. 30 minutes).
• By Road:
  • From Kathmandu: Long-distance buses take about 9–11 hours.
  • From Sunauli Border: Lumbini is just 28 km from the Nepal-India border at Sunauli/Bhairahawa.
• Local Transport: E-rickshaws, bicycles, and taxis are widely available in Lumbini Bazaar to reach the Mayadevi Temple complex within the Lumbini Master Plan area.

Best Time to Visit

• Peak Season (October to March): The weather is pleasant and cool, ideal for exploring the vast monastic zone on foot or by bicycle.
• Buddha Jayanti (Baisakh Purnima): The most significant time for spiritual seekers, though the weather can be very hot.
• Monsoon (July - September): The gardens are lush and green, but expect high humidity and rain.

Visitor Information & Tips

• Dress Code: Wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.
• Footwear: You must remove your shoes before entering the main temple complex. Socks are permitted.
• Photography: Photography is strictly prohibited inside the Mayadevi Temple building, although you can take photos in the exterior gardens.
• Master Plan Area: The site is large. Renting a bicycle or using an electric rickshaw is recommended to visit the various international monasteries.
• Silence and Respect: Maintain silence and respect the meditation areas and monks within the sacred garden.
• Beat the Heat: If visiting in the summer, start your tour as early as 6:00 AM to avoid the intense afternoon sun.
