Vasudeva Dwadashi Vrat Katha

Ashadh Shukla Paksha

Sage Durvasa said to Satyatapa - "In the Yadu dynasty, there was an excellent person named Vasudeva. His wife's name was Devaki. Devaki was a wife with good qualities and used to follow her duty of devotion to her husband (Pativrat Dharma) with commitment. She used to perform various types of fasts and rituals while being constantly engaged in the service of her husband regularly. Even after doing all the necessary religious deeds with devotion, she had no son.

Later, once the holy arrival of the divine sage Narada took place in the house of Vasudeva ji. Upon seeing the divine sage Narada, Vasudeva ji was gratified and after bowing to him with respect, began to welcome and honor him. Subsequently, Vasudeva ji, after ritualistically worshiping the divine sage Narada with humility, provided him with a seat, etc.

Thereafter, requesting with folded hands, Vasudeva ji said to the divine sage Narada - 'O best of sages! Even after performing various types of rituals, I had no son. O Lord! Please tell me some remedy for obtaining a son.'

Hearing Vasudeva ji's words, the divine sage Narada said - 'O best of the Yadus! I describe a task related to the gods, listen carefully. O sinless one! I am myself an eyewitness; Goddess Earth, appearing in the assembly of gods, had said - 'O gods! Now I have become incapable of bearing the burden. Wicked and sinful people are troubling me. Therefore, you all end them and remove this sorrow of mine.' Thus on the pathetic request of the Earth, all the gods meditated and remembered Lord Narayana. As soon as the gods meditated, Lord Narayana appeared before them.

Obtaining the sight of the merciful Lord, all the gods were gratified and said - 'O Lord! We all are blessed to have your sight. O ocean of mercy! Earth is suffering from the atrocities of the wicked and has become incapable of carrying the burden of sin. O Lord! Please favor by freeing Goddess Earth and all the creatures from the atrocities of these unrighteous ones.'

Hearing the prayer of the gods, Lord Shri Hari said - 'O gods! I am definitely always ready to do this holy task. I will take a human form and incarnate in the mortal world, but I will only reside in the womb of that woman who, along with her husband, will perform the ritual of the Dwadashi Vrat in the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashadha.' Saying this, Lord Shri Hari vanished from there and all the gods went to their respective worlds while being joyful.

Thereafter, I have arrived here. The special purpose of my arrival is that I should make you aware of this matter, because I know that none of your children are alive.' Saying this, the divine sage Narada described the procedure of the Ashadha Shukla Dwadashi Vrat before Vasudeva ji and vanished from there."

Sage Durvasa says - "O Sage! By the religious merit of this Dwadashi Vrat, the best of the Yadus, Vasudeva ji, obtained a supernatural son like Shri Krishna, who is an incarnation of Lord Shri Hari Himself. Besides, Vasudeva ji obtained great happiness, wealth, fame, and luxury. While enjoying all types of comforts throughout his life, at the end of his time, he attained the eternal abode of Lord Shri Hari. O great sage! I have described before you the glory of the Dwadashi Vrat performed in the month of Ashadha, you follow it according to your strength."
