Ambikeshwari Temple

Located in Ghorahi, Dang district, Ambikeshwari Temple is an important Shakti Peetha. Situated on the banks of the Katuwa Khola, Goddess Bhagwati is worshipped in this temple. This temple is considered the most famous religious site in the Dang Valley.

Mythological Origin and Legend

According to the Swasthani Purana, this is a major Shakti Peetha where Sati Devi's right ear is believed to have fallen. Because the 'ear' fell here, it is believed that the name of this place changed from 'Paura Bandha' to 'Ambapur'.

According to local folklore, long ago, a man from the Budhathoki family saw the Goddess in a dream who informed him of her residence. While searching according to the sign in the dream, an ear-shaped deep hole was found. An interesting story is prevalent that the Budhathoki couple cut off their tongue and nipples and offered them to test the power of the Goddess, and those parts were immediately restored to their original state by the grace of the Goddess.

History and Historical Evidence

The history of Ambikeshwari Temple is deeply connected with the regional royal family:

• King Ranabhim Shah's Bell: A bell in the temple dated 1863 BS (1806 AD) is the oldest evidence, which was offered by King Ranabhim Shah of Salyan. He was the son-in-law of King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha.
• Lion Statues: In 1922 BS, Dhir Shamsher offered two lion statues here on the occasion of the Bratabandha and marriage of Shri 5 Trailokya.

Temple Structure and Worship

Ambikeshwari Temple is a two-story north-facing pagoda style structure with a brass pinnacle (gajur). In the middle of the temple, on a platform about 1 meter high, there is a deep hole representing the ear of Sati Devi, which devotees worship with reverence.

A large crowd of devotees gathers here during Bada Dashain and Chaite Dashain. Special worship takes place on the days of Phulpati, Kalratri, and Ashtami of Dashain. This temple is also very famous for ceremonial activities like marriages and Bratabandha.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Tarigaun Airport in Tulsipur, Dang. From Tulsipur, Ghorahi is about a 45-minute drive. Nepalgunj Airport is also a major gateway, about 3-4 hours away by road.
• By Road: Ghorahi is well-connected by road from major cities like Kathmandu, Butwal, and Nepalgunj.
• Local Transport: The temple is located in Ward No. 18, Ambapur, about 1.5–2 km north of Ghorahi's main market (Traffic Chowk). It is easily accessible via paved roads by private vehicle, autorickshaw, or taxi. It is also a pleasant 20-30 minute walk from the market.

Best Time to Visit

• Seasons: Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May) offer the most comfortable weather for exploring the Dang Valley.
• Festivals: The temple is most vibrant during Bada Dashain and Chaite Dashain. Maghe Sankranti also sees large crowds and a local fair.

• Timings: The temple is generally open for visitors throughout the day. Rituals usually occur from 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
• Ceremonies: The temple is a very popular venue for Hindu weddings and Bratabandha (sacred thread) ceremonies, especially during auspicious months.
• Local Tips: The temple environment on the banks of Katuwa Khola is peaceful and ideal for meditation. No specific dress code is enforced, but modest attire is recommended as per local religious customs.
