Sagarnath Mahadev

Sagarnath Mahadev Temple, located in Ishwarpur Municipality of Sarlahi district, is an important religious and historical site of the Madhesh Province. This temple is located about 8 kilometers south-east of Lalbandi near the Sagarnath Forest Project area.

History and Mythological Belief

• Fall of Sati Devi's Body Part: According to religious belief, while Lord Shiva was wandering carrying the dead body of Sati Devi, a part of her body fell here. It is believed that the Shivalinga originated at the same place later and it began to be worshipped as a sacred Shakti Peetha.
• Establishment: The formal establishment of the modern structure of this temple took place in 2011 BS. This temple stands as the religious identity of Ishwarpur Municipality.

Architecture and Structure

• Nepali Temple Style: Sagarnath Mahadev Temple is built in the traditional Nepali temple style, in which a blend of local architecture can be seen.
• Main Inner Sanctum: An ancient Shivalinga is established in the main inner sanctum (Garbhagriha) of the temple. Artistic figures of various gods and goddesses are carved on the pinnacle and outer walls of the temple.
• Complex and Pond: The massive and sacred pond beside the temple has further increased its beauty and religious dignity. There is also a provision for a Bhajan-Kirtan hall and a rest house (Dharmashala) for devotees in the complex.

Religious and Cultural Importance

• Main Fairs: A large fair is held here especially during Mahashivaratri, Balachaturdashi, and every Monday of the month of Shrawan. On these occasions, thousands of devotees come from various districts of Nepal as well as from neighboring India.
• Shrawan Monday: In the month of Shrawan, there is a large crowd of 'Bol Bam' travelers who bring sacred water from the Bagmati River and offer it here.
