Shey Monastery (Shey Gompa)

Shey Monastery (Shey Gompa), located in the Upper Dolpa region of Dolpa district, is one of the most ancient and important Buddhist monasteries in Nepal. Located at an altitude of about 4,200 meters above sea level amidst bare mountains, this monastery is considered a center of spiritual peace.

History and Mythological Story

• Establishment: The establishment of Shey Monastery is believed to have taken place around the 11th century. Its name comes from the Tibetan word 'Shey', which means 'Crystal'. Therefore, it is also called the 'Crystal Monastery'.
• Story of Singye Yeshe: According to legend, the great 11th-century Buddhist master Singye Yeshe came here riding a flying snow leopard. It is believed that he established Buddhism after defeating local mountain spirits.
• International Fame: Peter Matthiessen's famous 1978 book 'The Snow Leopard' made this monastery known worldwide.

Religious and Cultural Importance

• Spiritual Heart: Shey Monastery is considered the 'spiritual heart' of Upper Dolpa. This monastery is mainly related to the Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
• Crystal Mountain (Ribo Drupta): Right in front of the monastery is the sacred 'Crystal Mountain', which is considered the younger brother of Mount Kailash in Tibetan Buddhism. Devotees perform circumambulation (Kora) of this mountain.
• Shey Fair: A grand 'Shey Fair' is organized here every 12 years (in the Year of the Dragon according to the Tibetan lunar calendar). Thousands of domestic and foreign pilgrims participate in this fair.

Architecture and Structure

• Tibetan Style: Shey Monastery is a two-story building built in the traditional Tibetan architectural style. Its outer walls are painted red.
• Artworks and Idols: Extremely beautiful and ancient murals of various incarnations of Buddha and Bodhisattvas are inside the monastery. Ancient idols and religious texts are kept safe here.
