Shivnagar Shiv Mandir

This temple, located in Shivnagar of Garuda Municipality in Rautahat district, is one of the most famous and ancient Shiva temples in the Madhesh Province. It is taken as a major religious tourist destination in this region.

History and Mythological Background

• Antiquity: It is estimated that this temple is about 500 years old. According to local history, its establishment was done by Dhruva Pratap Chotriya.
• Eleventh Rudra: This temple is considered one of the very few sites where worship is performed as the 'Eleventh Rudra Shiva'. The main Shivalinga in the sanctum of the temple is considered very powerful and unique.

Architecture and Structure

• Shikhar Style: The main structure of the temple is based on the traditional Shikhar style. There is a large black Shivalinga in the sanctum of the temple, which is surrounded by 11 other small Shivalingas.
• Decoration: Figures of various gods and goddesses and religious symbols are carved on the outer walls and the pinnacle of the temple. The temple complex is spacious and peaceful.

Festivals and Fairs

• Mahashivaratri: A massive fair is held here on the day of Mahashivaratri. On this occasion, millions of devotees from various districts of Nepal and even from neighboring India come for pilgrimage.
• Shrawan Monday (Bol Bam): Special worship is performed on every Monday of the month of Shrawan. Devotees bring water from the Bagmati or other sacred rivers and offer it here, which is called the 'Bol Bam' yatra.
• Religious Faith: Devotees believe that wishes made here with a true heart are fulfilled. People come from far and wide especially for the birth of children and removal of distress.
