Singhwahini Mandir

Singhwahini Mandir, located in the heart of Myanglung bazaar, the headquarters of Tehrathum district, is an extremely important religious and historical Shakti Peetha of this region. Bhagwati (Singhwahini) is worshipped here.

History and Naming

The history of this temple is believed to be connected with the origin of the name Myanglung. In the Limbu language, 'Myang' means cat and 'Lung' means stone. According to mythological belief, the name of the place became Myanglung after a cat was heard meowing (meow) on a stone. Singhwahini Mandir has remained as the patron goddess of the residents here since time immemorial. According to local folklore, the temple was established after a devotee received a vision of the Goddess in a dream.

Architecture and Features

Singhwahini Mandir is built in the traditional Nepali pagoda style. The pinnacle (gajur) and artistic doors of the temple have increased its beauty. In the temple complex, there are various other idols of gods and goddesses, a rest house (sattal), and a large bell. The peaceful environment of the temple and the spiritual energy here attract devotees. There is a popular belief that wishes are fulfilled and victory over enemies is obtained by visiting here.

Jatra and Festivals

• Bada Dashain: Grand worship and sacrifices are offered here during the time of Dashain. The special royal tradition of bringing Phulpati into the temple on the day of Phulpati is still maintained, with active participation from local administration and security agencies.
• Chaite Dashain: A large fair is held on the occasion of Chaite Dashain, where devotees come from far and wide for pilgrimage.
• Lakhe Jatra: Since the Newar community is in majority in Myanglung, this temple also becomes the center of the Lakhe Jatra, which runs from Nag Panchami to Krishna Janmashtami.
• Regular Puja: Special worship is performed every Tuesday and Saturday, with a thick presence of local residents.

For any pilgrim reaching Myanglung, visiting Singhwahini Mandir and the nearby small Pathibhara Mandir is considered mandatory.
