Supa Deurali

Supa Deurali Temple is located in a narrow gorge of the Mahabharat mountain range on the border of Sandhikharka and Sitganga Municipalities of Arghakhanchi district. This temple is a famous Shakti Peetha and religious tourist site of Nepal.

History and Mythological Legends

Two main legends are prevalent about the origin of Supa Deurali:

• Story of the Princess of Khanchi: Around 1600 BS, a princess of Khanchikot was married against her wish to the prince of Balrampur, India. While going in a palanquin (doli), the princess passed away near the place where the temple is currently located. After that, epidemics and famine spread in the Khanchi kingdom. It is believed that the epidemic subsided after the temple was established following advice that the soul of the princess had not found peace and worship should be performed there.
• Relation with Manakamana: Some consider Supa Deurali as another form of Goddess Manakamana of Gorkha. It is believed that she appeared as Supa Deurali in her maternal home (Khanchi) and as Manakamana in her husband's home (Gorkha).

Interesting Story of 'Lahure Tansiyeko' Cliff

The most famous and unique aspect of this temple is a human-like shape on the cliff near the temple. According to folklore, long ago a young man was going to be recruited into the Indian Army and made a vow at Supa Deurali saying "If I am recruited, I will offer worship at the temple when I return". He was recruited and returned, but he tried to go by another route to deceive the Goddess or forgot his vow. It is said that by the power of the Goddess, he was stuck to the massive cliff there. Even today, the human shape stuck to the cliff can be clearly seen, which is called 'Lahure Tansiyeko Bhir' (Cliff where the soldier is stuck).

Religious Importance and Worship

There is a popular belief that things asked for with a pure heart are fulfilled here. Especially newly married couples and those going for foreign employment reach here for pilgrimage and vows. A large fair is held here on Saturdays and during the time of Bada Dashain. Devotees offer goats, pigeons, and coconuts here. The construction of the modern and organized temple was done in 2042 BS. Since this temple is beside the Sandhikharka-Gorusinge road, travelers visit even by stopping their vehicles.
