Baidyanath Dham

Located in Sanfebagar Municipality of Achham district, Baidyanath Dham is an important religious and historical site among the four famous Dhams of Nepal. This Dham is located at the confluence of the Budhiganga and Saraswati (Parbhali) rivers.

Ravana's Penance and Origin of 'Baidyanath' Name

According to mythology, Ravana, the King of Lanka, was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He performed rigorous penance here to get a darshan of Shiva:

• Offering of Heads: Ravana cut off his nine heads one by one and offered them to the Havan Kunda. When he was ready to cut his tenth head, Lord Shiva appeared.
• Shiva as a Physician: Pleased with Ravana's devotion, Shiva took the form of a 'Baidya' (physician) and reattached all of Ravana's cut heads. Because Lord Shiva treated him as a physician, the name of this place became 'Baidyanath'.

Story of Shivalinga Installation

Shiva allowed Ravana to take a powerful Shivalinga to Lanka, but set a condition not to place it on the ground anywhere on the way. During the journey, when Ravana had to go for an urgent nature call, he gave the Linga to a shepherd (who was actually Ganesh in disguise) to hold. The shepherd, pretending the Linga was heavy, placed it on the ground. When Ravana returned, the Linga was already fixed in the ground, which is still worshipped here.

Historical and Religious Importance

• Contribution of Amar Singh Thapa: During the unification of Nepal, the Gorkhali army under the leadership of General Amar Singh Thapa offered weapons to the temple, which are still safe in the temple museum.
• Veda Vidhyashram: A Veda Vidhyashram has been in operation here since 2055 BS, where young students (batuks) are given Sanskrit and Vedic education.
• Main Festivals: A huge fair is held here on Mahashivaratri and Maghe Sankranti, where thousands of devotees come from Nepal and India.

Travel Guide: How to Reach

• By Air: Dhangadhi Airport is the nearest major airport, about 300 km away. From Dhangadhi, it is a 9–10 hour drive by bus or hired jeep to Sanfebagar. Sanfebagar Airport is much closer but flight schedules are currently infrequent and irregular.
• By Road: Regular bus and jeep services connect Achham to Dhangadhi, Mahendranagar, and Kathmandu. The bus journey from Kathmandu is approximately 20–24 hours.
• Local Access: The temple is highly accessible as it lies near the major commercial hub of Sanfebagar. Local transport is frequently available to the temple site.

Best Time to Visit

• Seasons: The most pleasant months for travel in the mid-hills are September to November and March to May.
• Festivals: Maha Shivaratri (February/March) is the most significant festival. Maghe Sankranti (January) is also a major cultural event featuring traditional dances and rituals.

• Timings: The temple is generally open for darshan from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
• Museum: Visitors can see ancient weapons and artifacts offered to the temple by historical figures like Amar Singh Thapa in the temple museum.
• Local Tips: Modest accommodation and local eateries are available in the nearby towns of Sanfebagar and Mangalsen. Respect the traditional educational environment of the Veda Vidhyashram located within the complex.
