Khairabang Bhuwaneshwari

Khairabang Bhuwaneshwari Temple, located in Hiwalcha of Sharada Municipality-11 of Salyan district, is an extremely powerful and ancient Shakti Peetha of the Karnali Province. This temple is located on the top of a hill at an altitude of about 1,600 feet from sea level.

History and Mythological Belief

Khairabang Bhuwaneshwari is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Nepal. According to mythology, it is believed that the left breast (according to some beliefs, kidney) of Sati Devi fell here while Lord Shiva was wandering carrying her dead body. Since there are two goddesses, two Shivalingas, and two Yoginis in the same place here, it is a popular belief that there is double divine power than other Peethas. Historical evidence has been found that regular worship has been going on here since 1480 BS.

Architecture

Improving the previous structure, this temple is currently being reconstructed in the grand Nepali pagoda style. Artistic use of stone, mud, and wood has been made in the temple. A new grand brass idol has been established here in 2075 BS, with large tiger figures placed on its left and right. This temple is spread over an area of about 27 Ropanis.

Worship Method and Sacrifice Tradition

There is a special crowd of devotees here on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Ashtami and Navami of the Shukla Paksha. There is a tradition for devotees of Brahmin and Chhetri communities to sit here and recite Chandi. There is a historical custom of offering Panchabali (goat, buffalo, sheep, duck, and pigeon) mainly here.

Fairs and Festivals

• Bada Dashain and Chaite Dashain: A large religious fair is held here for 15 days twice a year (Chaitra and Ashwin Shukla Paksha).
• Devotees: During the fair, thousands of visitors come from various districts of Nepal and even from India.

• By Road: Take a bus from Kathmandu (Gongabu Bus Park) to Khalanga, Salyan (approx. 16 hours). Alternatively, travel from Dang or Nepalgunj by local vehicle.
• By Air: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj Airport (45–50 mins), then drive to Khalanga, Salyan (approx. 7 hours).
• Local Access: From Khalanga, the temple is reachable via the Khairabang Mandir Road. It is located on a hilltop, reachable by local transport followed by a short walk or climb.

Best Time to Visit

• Dashain (September/October): The most popular time for pilgrims, especially during Navaratri.
• Spring (March to May): Pleasant weather and lush green hills make it ideal for sightseeing.
• Autumn (September to November): Offers the clearest views of the surrounding landscapes.
